Capacitor: Heart of Electronics Circuits

Electronic circuits are simple without a capacitor, which is a really important component when it comes to its ability to store and discharge electrical energy. It consists in storing electrical charge between two plates made of conductive material separated by an insulator, called a dielectric. There are capacitors of all shapes and sizes for all sorts of uses in electronics from smoothing voltage, energy storage and signal filtering. Capacitors are essential to keep that stability and performance of electronic devices from power supplies to audio equipment.

Functions of Types of Capacitors

When we talk about choosing a right capacitor for a project what’s more important is the understanding of the different types of the capacitors. There are various types of most common types of ceramic, electrolytic and tantalum capacitors and they each provide different benefits. High frequency application often uses ceramic capacitors while electrolytic capacitors are used for high value capacitance and are the main decoupling capacitors in a power supply circuit. Like the dielectric materials used in capacitor part, capacitors also have the aspect of having to choose between plastic, glass, and paper dielectric materials, which directly affect their performance and circuit application. Understanding these variations helps in selecting the correct capacitor to coalesce a device’s function to its optimum.
